The Daybreak trailer has already been released, which gives a glimpse of what we can expect from the shows plot, but you can read on for everything you need to know about the show.
When is Daybreak out on Netflix?
In a change to Netflix’s usual release schedules, Daybreak will come out on Thursday, October 23 at one minute past midnight PT. When the series comes out in your area will depend on your time difference from the west coast of the U.S.–On the east coast, for example, the show will be out at 3:01 a.m.
On that date, all 10 episodes of the first series will be released onto Netflix.
Who is in the cast of Daybreak?
The series stars a batch of young teen newcomers playing high school students. The show’s lead Josh Wheeler, however, is played by seasoned actor Colin Ford, who has been working since the age of eight and is probably best known for playing the young Sam Winchester in Supernatural.
Daybreak also has a teen movie veteran in its cast as Ferris Bueller’s Day Off star Matthew Broderick plays Burr, the cheerful principal of Glendale High.
Among the other students who go there are jock turned hippie pacifist Wesley Fists (Booksmart’s Austin Crute) and pyromaniac Angelica (The Young and the Restless’ Alyvia Alyn Lind), who team up with Josh when the apocalypse comes, while Josh’s love interest is popular girl Sam Dean, portrayed by The Lodge’s Sophie Simnett.
The team’s main adversary is a murderous group of jocks, led by Riverdale’s Cody Kearsley and his second-in-command, Mona Lisa (Jeanté Godlock of The Simone Biles Story), so nicknamed because she never smiles.
Other lead cast members in Daybreak include Bosch’s Gregory Kasyan as Eli Cardashyan, who has barricading himself into the local mall, while Smash’s Krysta Rodriguez is Ms. Crumble, one of the few adults known to have survived the apocalypse.
What will happen in Daybreak?
The show’s official Netflix summary reads: “High school isn’t the end of the world… until it is. In this post-apocalyptic, genre-bending series, the city of Glendale, California is populated by marauding gangs of jocks, gamers, the 4-H Club, and other fearsome tribes who are kicking ass as they fight to survive in the wake of a nuclear blast (on the night of Homecoming…ugh). Following an eclectic group of survivors as they navigate this strange and treacherous world, Daybreak is part samurai saga, part endearing coming-of-age story, and part Battle Royale.”
The series is based on a 2012 cult comic book by Brian Ralph, though the Netflix show has a high school element missing from the graphic novel, of which Ralph said to Den of Geek: “In terms of the high school aspect, it seemed fitting! I think it was Brad [Peyton, series executive producer] that made the comment, but everyone can relate to the feeling of being in high school, the feeling of being “so over” this world and wishing you lived in another one. The apocalypse is that “other world” and really allows for the playing field to be leveled so to speak, and for everyone to reinvent themselves.”
Is there a trailer for Daybreak?
The promo for the series was released earlier in October, and gives viewers their first glimpse of Josh and the rest of the survivors of the apocalypse. Compared to other post-apocalyptic shows on TV, the teens of Daybreak seem a lot less savvy, with the trailer showing Josh trying and failing to cut off a rival’s hand.
The preview also reveals that the series will include two timelines; Normal high school life and life after a nuclear bomb wipes out the adult population of Glendale (and maybe the world.)
Daybreak is released on October 24 on Netflix.
